Who Do You Think You Are?
A “Getting Started in Genealogy” Lunch & Learn

So, who do you think you are? Do you know what country your American ancestors originally came from? Do you know their names or occupations? What wars did your ancestors fight in? What church did they attend? Where are they buried? So many questions!
This lunch & learn will provide a basic introduction for folks wanting to get started on tracing their roots. It will also be a good refresher for those who are already into genealogy. First, a panel of Muscogee Genealogical Society members will tell you about how they got started in genealogy. You’ll also have an overview of what’s available to help you in your search – what records you might have around the house, how to contact relatives, what’s at the courthouse, what’s at the library, how the Mormons can help, newspaper research, DNA studies and how to get organized.
After lunch, there will be an hour-long demonstration of Ancestry.com, along with mention of some other internet resources that can help you in your search. At the workshop, attendees will receive information on up-coming genealogy workshops offered by the Columbus Public library and details about a special genealogy event that the Muscogee Genealogical Society will be offering in August. That event will be a free consultation service, in which experienced members of the society will meet with anyone interested in searching for their roots — to help them start their search. These sessions will last for one hour. Stay tuned for more information on this service.
