March 10th Meeting: Exploring the Courthouse
This is my site Written by admin on February 25, 2019 – 6:54 am

For many of us, the idea of visiting the county courthouse where our ancestors lived overwhelms us.  Where do we start?  This program will provide you with some guidance by explaining what records are held in a typical courthouse and how to use them.

When:           Sunday, March 10, 2019, 3:00pm

Where:          Columbus Public Library, Main Branch Synovus Room A

Topic:            Exploring the Courthouse

Speakers:      Linda McCardle

Records like wills/estate papers, marriages and deeds can help you figure out relationships and learn more about your family.  Courthouses also have unique records you may not be familiar with: estrays, gun-toting licenses, cattle brand registrations, etc.

We are lucky to have a lot of digitized courthouse records online.  But a word to the wise: not all of these digitized records are indexed, and there are even more volumes and files in courthouse vaults that have not been digitized.

Courthouse records can lead to amazing finds that will help expand your family story.  Come learn how to explore them in a talk by Muscogee Genealogical Society President, Linda McCardle.

Linda is a retired Muscogee County educator who developed an interest in genealogy and family at a young age.  She is the author of A Just and Holy Cause? (Mercer University Press, 2016), which features her Civil War ancestor’s letters (transcribed and annotated).

Light refreshments will be served. Free and open to the public. Call 706-322-3175 for more information.
