On Sundays, between March 1949 and September 1969, The Columbus Ledger-Enquirer published short biographies of local and regional business, governmental and social persons in its editorial section. The weekly column was entitled “Typewriter Portrait,” and featured an intricate pencil sketch of the biographee. Former Bradley Reference Librarian Joan Whiteley has created an index of over 900 of these portraits, presented here – compliments of the Muscogee Genealogical Society.
At the time of this posting, 20th century Columbus newspapers are available digitally through Chattahoochee Valley Libraries with a valid library card: https://infoweb.newsbank.com/signin/ColumbusPublicLibrary/AWNB Note: Non-residents may purchase a library card ($35/year) that gives access to electronic resources. The Sunday Columbus Ledger-Enquirer is available at this site from 1903 – 1988, however 22 years of it are missing: 1907-1909 and 1923-1941. These papers are also available on microfilm at the Columbus Public Library (Genealogy Room) and Columbus State University Library (Reference Department). However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, access to these collections may be limited.
We invite you to search the index for any persons of interest and make note of the date of their portraits. You may be able to access it electronically – or on microfilm at either of the above-mentioned libraries.
The Muscogee Genealogical Society offers a huge “Thank You” to Joan for this important local resource. We truly appreciate the time and effort she put into creating this index, which will benefit local genealogists and historians in their research endeavors.
