Join us Saturday, June 29, 2024, 2:45 p.m. for an MGS meeting and a talk by Roger Harris, local genealogist, and Jane Brady, executive director of Historic Linwood Foundation. The talk is titled “FOR TAPHOPHILES ONLY” and will be in Synovus Room A of the Columbus Public Library on Macon Road.

Are you a taphophile? Do you love visiting cemeteries – looking at the tombstone art, reading the inscriptions, learning about the cemetery residents? The word taphophile comes from the Greek taph (tomb) and philia (love of or admiration). If you love cemeteries, you are a taphophile! If you are a genealogist, you are probably a taphophile as well, since most genealogists want to visit the final resting places of their ancestors! So, all taphophiles are cordially invited to hear two short presentations on cemeteries. First, Roger Harris, a Columbus native with a lifelong addiction to genealogical pursuits, will discuss one of his favorite online burial resources: Find a Grave. Roger will explain the pros and cons associated with the site and share some of his interesting Find a Grave experiences. Our second speaker is Jane Brady, who has served as Executive Director of Historic Linwood Foundation for 12 years. Jane will be giving us a brief history of Linwood Cemetery and the Foundation, and telling us about recent projects at the cemetery, including one that utilizes ground-penetrating radar. Please join us for light refreshments from 2:45 pm – 3:00 pm. Our program will begin at 3:00 pm. Free and open to the public. For more information call 706-322-3175.
